Fireplace tile
Fireplace walls that become the room
Fireplace walls make up much of our portfolio. One wall, one material, and nowhere to hide a bad cut.

Materials we set
- Large-format porcelain slab — marble, onyx and stone looks in panels up to full wall height.
- Ribbed and textured tile for a modern, architectural chimney.
- Stacked ledger stone and split-face travertine for warmth and texture.
- Natural stone laid in an ashlar pattern.
Slabs need a different kind of installer
A full-height slab is heavy, unforgiving and expensive if it cracks. It has to go on a wall that is flat, not just plumb, and every panel has to line up with the next. You can see the leveling clips holding the panels in our in-progress photos — that is the stage that decides how the finished wall looks.
Mitred corners, a clean reveal around the firebox, and veins that flow across joints are the details that separate a feature wall from a tiled wall.
Gas, electric and see-through units
We tile around linear electric fireplaces, gas inserts and two-sided see-through units, working to the manufacturer’s clearances. If you’re changing the unit too, bring us in early so the framing suits the tile.

Questions
Can you put slab or stone over my existing fireplace?
Usually, yes. Most of our fireplace walls are built over an existing surround. We check the wall is strong and flat enough for the weight, and work to the fireplace manufacturer’s clearances.
Do you supply the tile, or do I buy it?
Either works. Many customers choose their own tile from a showroom; we can tell you how much to order, check it suits the space, and supply setting materials. Tell us which you prefer when you get in touch.
What’s the difference between slab and tile on a fireplace?
Slabs are large porcelain or stone panels — sometimes floor-to-ceiling — so the wall has few or no joints and the veining flows. Tile is smaller and has more grout lines but more pattern options. Slabs need a flatter wall and more careful handling.
